PFAS getting into our local water supply has been in the news a lot lately. But what is it? Do you need to worry? What can you do about it? Let us help answer some of your questions.
What is PFAS?
PFAS stands for perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl. It encompasses a family of man-made chemicals known as “forever chemicals” because they do not breakdown easily in the environment or our bodies. These chemicals have been used in many industries since the 1940s because they are resistant to heat, water and oil. You can find PFAS in many consumer goods including non-stick cookware, stain-resistant carpet, food packaging, and firefighting foams.
Do I Need to Worry?
Maybe. In 2016, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) set a health advisory on two PFAS chemicals: PFOA and PFOS which are both found in firefighting foams. Neither of these chemicals are still manufactured or imported to the USA. However, they have been used by airports and local fire and rescue agencies.
It is difficult to say how dangerous PFAS chemicals can be to people because there hasn’t been enough research completed. We need to know if it is specific compounds and how much exposure is too much.
Studies have consistently shown that exposure can increase cholesterol levels. Some studies have found possible correlations of PFAS chemicals and the development of fetuses and young children with possible low birth weight, learning challenges, and behavior issues. Other studies suggest links to cancer, immune system disorder, fertility problems, thyroid disease, and hormone suppression.
What Can I Do About It?
Kohley’s now offers the PIONEERTM Lead & Cyst Filtration System. This whole-house lead removal system can successfully reduce the presence of PFOA/PFOS as water enters your home. Whether you have a private drinking water well or are on a municipal water system, taking the extra precautionary measure is always encouraged.
PIONEERTM has been certificated by NSF in PFOA and PFOS standard. Call today to learn more about reducing the PFAS in your drinking water.
